One of the latest attacks on local party democracy is the barring of North Tyne mayor Jamie Driscoll from standing on the long list as a candidate for the rather larger newly-created North East Mayoralty. The exclusion of a sitting official on nothing but factional grounds is without precedent, even for the current rightwing Labour leadership.
