Burnham blocked by Labour NEC

Andy Burnham, Labour mayor of Greater Manchester, has been blocked from standing for the Gorton and Denton by-election on 26 February. This is widely seen as interference by the Labour leadership. It seems that Starmer wants to keep Burnham on the sidelines. It seems likely that Burnham would have been selected as the Labour candidate in an open selection process and he is widely considered the best hope for Labour holding on to this seat. Now they will in all likelihood crash and burn. Angeliki Stogia has been chosen as the Labour candidate. Stogia will face off against Reform UK’s Matthew Godwin and Hannah Spencer for the Green Party.
